City Plate - Hong Kong

Part of our eighth series of City Plates, "Points of Departure."  This collection explores departure points for legendary journeys: prospectors seeking their fortunes, explorers setting out for new lands, and importers and exporters shipping vast quantities of goods.

Characterized by its deep natural harbor, Hong Kong is one of the busiest ports in the world.  It supports the globe’s largest re-export economy, which distributes manufactured goods from mainland China to the rest of the world.  The city has established a transportation and logistics infrastructure that includes one of the world’s busiest container ports, as well as a massive airport for international cargo.  The plate highlights Victoria Harbor, situated between the industrial port area of Hong Kong Island and the commercial center of the Kowloon Peninsula.
