Part of our third series of City Plates. The theme of this third collection is "Capital Migration." Three of these cities were at one time seats of government; one became its nation’s capital in 1960. All remain centers of economic power, cultural leaders, and symbols of their country’s national identity.
Marked by its status as a leading city on the international stage of design and fashion, many refer to Melbourne as Australia’s "sporting and cultural capital." Founded in 1835, Melbourne quickly grew into a major financial hub, owing in part to its strategic location on Port Phillip. Although Melbourne's port system was important economically, the Victorian gold rush of the mid-19th century transformed it into a railroad city. Melbourne is also known as the “Garden City,” owing to its abundance of parks and gardens.
