City Plate - Las Vegas

Part of our second series of City Plates.  The theme of this second collection is "Culture and Capital(ism)," and the cities chosen are New Orleans and Washington, D.C., both rich in history and culture, and the booming megalopolises of Las Vegas and Dubai.  With this theme we ask: how does a capital investment in manufacturing culture impact city form?

Compared to most other American cities, the flow of capital into Las Vegas is staggering.  And, naturally, big dollars mean big development.  When compared to such iconic American locations such as the White House or Capitol building, the mammoth scale of Vegas' casinos is stunning.  The glitzy Vegas strip is shown in white.  When compared to other plates in the collection, the amount of blue and green, usually used to indicate water and green spaces, is miniscule.  In fact, on the Las Vegas plate, green spaces denote private golf courses.
