Collection # 3
The theme for this third collection is Capital Migration. Three of the new cities were at one time the seat of government; one became its nation’s capital in 1960. All remain centers of economic power, cultural leaders, and symbols of their country’s national identity.

Melbourne - pop. 3.74 million
Though it served as the Australian capital for less than 30 years, Melbourne is marked by its status as a leading city on the international stage of design and fashion. Many refer to it as Australia’s ‘sporting and cultural capital’. Founded in 1835, Melbourne quickly grew into a major financial hub, owing in part to its strategic location on Port Phillip. Although its port system was economically important, the Victorian gold rush of the mid-19th-century transformed Melbourne into a railroad city. Owing to its abundance of parks and gardens, Melbourne is also known as the “Garden City” and is the lushest city in Australia.

These porcelain plates measure 12” across, with each city’s downtown core printed on a black background. Key buildings are represented with red icons, while rivers and public spaces are shown in blue and green. Each plate is boxed and includes a key to the buildings and spaces included on the plate.
